Webinar: Towards safer sports environment: transforming MEN’talities
📅 5 February 2025, 14:00-15:30 (GMT+1)
Violence in all forms remains prevalent in sports, disproportionately affecting women and children. Hundreds of cases of sexual, physical and emotional abuse in sport have come to light in recent years. More and more athletes denounce psychological and emotional abuse as being part of “sports culture” (EC, 2024)
Empowering women and gender-diverse individuals is key to tackling gender-based violence in sports. However, sustainable change requires the active involvement of men as advocates for gender equality. By creating safe spaces for men to explore their identities, understand masculinities, and challenge negative stereotypes, they can become powerful allies in transforming social norms and addressing gender-based violence.
This webinar will explore how violence in sports reflects broader societal expectations of masculinity, where aggression and dominance are often linked to respect and social order. It aims to engage men in promoting gender equality and influencing other men’s behaviour. The session will also highlight how creating gender-equitable behaviours can lead to positive outcomes for all genders, benefiting both sports and society.
